I'm always appalled when I hear of people who drink liters or 6 packs of sodas per day. I see a lot of people who actually can't even go on a cruise without bringing along a case or two. That's just sad! Kids drink far too much of this stuff and are missing out on calcium which will certainly bite them in the back down the road.
Now we're hearing initial stirrings from the very well respected Harvard Nurses Health Study (240,000 Nurses followed for 20 years or more) that says just 2 or more diet sodas a day may be doing harm to kidneys.

I had some liters of soda left behind by houseguests once (two teenagers who lived on the stuff) - we rarely drink the stuff. Workman came to fix sumthin - I asked if his kids would drink it - he said "Oh, it'll be gone by tonight".
I'd hate to know what percentage of food expense goes out for soda in this country.
Even if there WERE no damage to kidneys or bones, just think of the money wasted on empty calories.

When you say, "wasted" you should realize that money spent on pleasure is not necessarily wasted. Would you consider a concert ticket a waste of money? What about a vacation? Around here bottled water is more of a waste than soda because in this city the water out of the drinking fountain is as good as bottled water.

Not to mention sugar/high fructose corn syrup. I can't recall the last time I drank a soda, diet or otherwise. Oh wait, yes, I can! I bought an orange soda when I was waiting for the Penske truck to arrive when I was moving. Bottled water cost twice as much as a bottle of orange soda, it was hot and I was thirsty. I refuse to pay $2.25 for a friggin bottle of water.

No link to other drinks? If the problem is High Fructose corn syrup and artificial sweetener then why no link to Tea's, sport drinks, crystal light, cool aid, ketchup, BBQ sauce, or any of the other 1000 products that contain these items. All studies amount to the opinion of the person evaluating the data or being paid to speak another person's opinion.
Besides In a few months the soda or artificial sweetener industry will pay someone to release a new study to contradict this one.

There's another study that found that when some newly diagnosed diabetic people switch to diet soda from sugar soda it's self- defeating. Because there's no carbohydrate/sugar hit with diet sodas, your body still craves carbohydrates because it expects carbohydrates when you drink a sweet but no-sugar drink. That's why people develop such cravings for even the diet drinks. If you don't drink MORE diet drinks, you still crave carbohydrates. Lynn in Fargo

What is it specifically that appalls you about liters and six packs... would it be okay to drink carbonated soft drinks by the quart, what about a case of 24... why are you prejudiced towards the metric system (liters) and the number "6"... or does it appall you only when you "hear" about it... is it just fine and dandy if you don't hear about it... and who tells you all this information. People don't approach me and tell me about their soda consumption... they typically say Hi, How are ya... can I get you something to drink? Sure, I'll have the same but go real easy on the 7Up, we don't want to appall Goomba... just top off the extra space in my glass with 7 Crown... I hope Goomba doesn't mind the number "7" too. hehe
